Your guide to finding the best spots in Melbourne for remote working

In this age of remote working and frequent interstate business travel, as a freelancer or a contractor who is able to work away from your client office, you may find yourself searching for a quiet place to work, while still being amongst people.
Business travellers might be unfamiliar with the spaces available to you where you can grab a bite for lunch and continue your productivity. This week we did the research for you and explored the city of Melbourne to find the best spaces for remote working.
It’s important to remember that in a city like Melbourne, there are infinite options for working spaces – but you might have to think outside the square a little. We have found some great spots that can comfortably accommodate the needs of a remote worker, including access to WIFI and provide a good place to meet with customers or expand your network.
State Library of Victoria – and onsite café, Mr Tulk
At the State Library, you’ll have access to everything you need – free WIFI, walking distance to all of the Library’s facilities such as meeting spaces for hire, access to a traditional and online library catalogue for research and private study areas. Mr Tulk, the onsite café, has a fantastic menu to sustain yourself for a busy working day.
Federation Square – A diverse public space in the centre of Melbourne
Federation Square is the perfect location for a remote worker wanting to get out of the home office and be amongst people. Located on the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets in the CBD, Fed square is a unique combination of public spaces, cafes and restaurants – most perfectly suitable for remote working. The WIFI is fast and stable and you can stay in the public spaces as long as they are open. Flinders street train station is directly across the road, making it a very accessible option.
Auction Rooms Cafe – Near the Queen Victoria Market
With a delicious breakfast menu for those early morning client meetings, coffee to keep you going and spacious surroundings, Auction Rooms Café completes the offering for remote workers with a good WIFI connection. After you’ve sampled one of their specialty egg dishes, you can get stuck into some serious productivity. Located in an area known to have some good executive short stay apartment options, if you are visiting Melbourne for work and staying here, this is a good option within walking distance .
Library at the Dock – Docklands
Docklands’ new public library is part of the Community Hub and offers free WIFI. It is a multi-use facility that includes a range of spaces for hire including meeting rooms, a gallery, a performance space, creative editing suites, and other bookable spaces.  It also serves as a traditional library and can offer the quiet space needed for days when you really need to focus. It is in close proximity to the Docklands restaurants precinct too, so options for lunch are endless.
Space & Co – Co-working spaces in Melbourne
If a café or public setting isn’t conducive to a productive mindset for you, then it might be worth looking into signing up to a membership with a co-working space provider, such as Space & Co. Space & Co manage a number of co-working spaces within the Melbourne CBD. Levels of membership and costs vary and these can be up or downscaled as needed. You can book part time hot desks to full time desks and offices, but all levels of membership give you access to usage of printers, meeting rooms and Wi-Fi. Also included is access to luxury change room facilities and close proximity to public transport, shopping centres and cafes.
If you have the ability to work remotely, you may be in the position to explore many of these spaces. The beauty of flexible working is that you are free to work at a different location each day if that suits you or from the comfort of your home or hotel. Take the time to explore some different locations to gain an understanding of the environment that inspires your best work. Don’t forget, you’re not “chained” to a desk anymore, so you’re free to choose where you would like to work.
