ICT and Sales roles among the hardest to fill in Australia

Despite rising levels of unemployment, one in four job vacancies remain unfilled after one month, with 13% still open after three months, according to new research by global job site Indeed and the Centre for Economics and Business Research.
While the hospitality sector remains the hardest across the board to fill, over a third of the top 20 hardest roles to fill come from the ICT sector. These roles include software engineers, network and computer systems administrators and analysts.
Sales representatives, managers and supervisors also ranked among the top 20. The hardest role to fill was that of an actuary, with over 18% of actuary positions unfilled after 3 months. A full list of the top 20 roles can be found here.
Filling vacancies was most difficult in Sydney, with 14.4% still empty after three months, while Adelaide had the most success with only 12.3% roles not filled in this time.
“Despite a backdrop of rising unemployment, especially amongst young people, there are still industries that experience challenges filling specialised roles. This data suggests that companies need to implement strategies such as training, upskilling or sponsorship to accelerate the recruitment pipeline where demand outstrips supply in Australia,” according to Paul D’Arcy, SVP at Indeed.
Though organisations still struggle filling certain niche roles, across the board they still have a comparatively easier time hiring than other markets, with 72% of roles filled within a month. This compares to only 44% of US roles and 51% of UK roles. This makes Australia an ‘employers’ market’ for the majority of roles, with employers having more luck filling roles than employees are landing them.
